Peru: Protests erupt over allegations that Antamina breached community agreements

Several communities in Peru’s Áncash region launched an indefinite strike against Compañía Minera Antamina, accusing the company of failing to comply with agreements made over the past 25 years. Community leaders claim that around 100 commitments related to health, education, employment, and local development have not been fulfilled.

Clashes were reported between demonstrators and the National Police of Peru, who used tear gas to regain control of access routes, resulting in several injuries, according to residents.

Antamina responded to the Business and Human Rights Center invitation to comment on the allegation.
