Montenegro suspends work of lead, zinc mine Supja Stijena, 11 July 2025
Montenegro's energy and mining ministry said it has temporarily suspended the operations of lead and zinc mine Suplja Stijena, controlled by Polish zinc producer ZGH Boleslaw, for polluting the Cehotina river in the northern municipality of Pljevlja.
The suspension is a preventive and protective measure following an incident that caused damages to the environment and contamination of the Cehotina river, the ministry said in a statement...
"In this specific case, the damage has been caused by the formation of a cavern in the area of the flotation pond, following a sudden geological phenomenon, most likely an earthquake, a landslide or a rockfall. This cavern has enabled water from the flotation pond to find an underground passage to distant water sources that resulted in watercource pollution," the ministry said...
