Brazil: Wind energy expansion to be allegedly tied to human rights abuses
In Brazil, the rapid expansion of wind energy projects, particularly in states like Bahia and Ceará, has led to serious allegations from Indigenous and traditional communities. Dialogue Earth's reports that companies have installed turbines on or near Indigenous lands without free, prior, and informed consent, in violation of national and international standards. Communities such as the Tremembé and Tupinambá describe disruptions to their daily lives, including noise pollution, restricted access to sacred sites and natural resources, and environmental degradation. Some leaders accuse companies of land grabbing and failing to respect Indigenous decision-making processes. The article underscores a pattern where clean energy development, despite its sustainability goals, reproduces colonial and extractive practices at the expense of vulnerable populations.
We invited Eletrobras to comment on the related allegations. The company responded.
