EVRAZ NTMK faces potential legal action over phenol discharges into the Malaya Kushva River, 1 July 2025
Rosprirodnadzor found that EVRAZ NTMK has been systematically discharging wastewater containing phenol into the Malaya Kushva River, which led to the plant receiving an official warning. An inspection by the Ural Department of the environmental authority confirmed that water samples taken downstream from the plant’s discharge points showed significant exceedances of the maximum permissible concentrations of phenol.
However, the plant has been attempting to refute the allegations.
Environmental experts are currently determining the extent of the damage caused to the river and the surrounding ecosystem. Once the assessment is completed, the plant will receive a notice specifying the amount of compensation required. EVRAZ NTMK will be obliged to remedy the consequences of its activities within 30 days, otherwise it may face legal proceedings.
