USA: Uber found liable in two test cases over sexual assaults by drivers amid thousands of similar lawsuits
In February 2026, a federal jury in Arizona found Uber liable in a lawsuit brought by a woman who said she was sexually assaulted by one of its drivers in 2023 and awarded her USD8.5m in damages. This was the first test trial out of around 3,300 similar lawsuits that have been consolidated in federal court.
In April 2026, a jury in North Carolina found Uber liable in the second test trial to take place, ordering the company to pay USD5,000 to the victim.
The company argues that it is not responsible for the actions of its drivers, whom it considers independent contractors.
The company is also facing more than 500 similar cases in California state court, where it won the only trial held there so far.
