“Tragic accident at Antamina: senior operations manager dies,” 23 April 2025
Antamina stated that it has launched an internal investigation and expressed its commitment to fully cooperating with the authorities to clarify the facts.
A tragic workplace accident occurred at the facilities of Compañía Minera Antamina, located in the Áncash region of Peru, resulting in the death of its senior operations manager, while another executive was left seriously injured.
A large-capacity haul truck—a Komatsu 980 with a load capacity of 400 tons—crushed a pickup truck carrying the two workers in the middle of the operational area.
Edwin Colque Calisaya, Antamina’s senior operations manager, who was leading mining operations in the area, was killed in the accident. Meanwhile, Yorhinio León Robles, superintendent of drilling and blasting, sustained serious injuries and was urgently transferred to a medical center, where he is receiving specialized care.
The mining company confirmed the tragedy through an official statement in which it expressed deep sorrow over the death of Colque Calisaya, describing him as a key member of its team. “This is a difficult time for those of us who are part of Compañía Minera Antamina,” the statement said, also noting that the necessary support is being provided to the families of those affected.
The company decided to completely suspend its operations under a “total safety shutdown,” with the aim of protecting the rest of its personnel and allowing for a detailed analysis of the circumstances that led to the accident.
Antamina assured that it has initiated an internal investigation and reiterated its commitment to fully cooperate with the authorities to clarify the events and prevent a similar incident from occurring again.
