Chile: Teck’s Carmen de Andacollo mine contaminated water for years

Authorities and local representatives in Andacollo confirmed serious environmental damage linked to the Carmen de Andacollo mine, operated by the Canadian company Teck. The company acknowledged that chemicals and water seepage from its tailings dam had been contaminating water sources affecting agricultural communities for years.

Local officials accused the company of minimizing the seriousness of the contamination. In response, the municipal council is demanding that Teck carry out internal investigations and identify those responsible, seeking accountability and clarity regarding the extent of the environmental damage.

Teck Resources responded to the Business and Human Rights Center invitation to comment on the allegation.
